As New Orleans natives, we went on a quest for King Cakes around 30A! Here is what we found! Happy Mardi Gras y’all!
(1) Our first stop was Black Bear in Grayton Beach. We tried their Praline and Lemon Curd Cream Cheese slices. The Lemon Curd Cream Cheese was the slice we liked more because it was moist and softer. The layer of praline filling in the Praline slice was yummy, but was a bit more dry in texture. Overall great options to enjoy with their delicious coffee! (They are also offering Traditional, Cream Cheese and Praline Cream Cheese flavors by the slice or a whole cake.)
(2) Sunrise Coffee in Gulfplace was up next! They are getting King Cakes shipped in from Meche’s King Cakes in Lafayette, Louisiana. So if you want the “real deal” from the Mardi Gras state this is your spot. This was our first time trying Meche’s King Cake and we decided to buy a whole cake to bring home – Blueberry flavor. They are also selling them by the slice. Meche’s specializes in donuts and we could certainly tell. The taste and texture is like a big donut King Cake with a thick layer of sweet icing. Those of you who crave more decadent desserts will love this one!
(3) Blue Mountain Bakery has two options to choose from! King Cake Scones if you prefer a breakfast scone inspired by King Cake flavors, or a more traditional King Cake. We love both because they are moist and lighter versions of usually rich King Cake, making it easier to enjoy more. So far the icing on their King Cake is our favorite locally – whipped texture with a light sweetened cream cheese flavor. It tastes very similar to our favorite King Cake we used to get in New Orleans – Dong Phuong. If you’ve had it, you know. Dong Phuong’s King Cakes sell out before they’re even on the shelf. Place an order with Chef Kyle at Blue Mountain Bakery to reserve your King Cake! (*Both come with pecans which we love, but if you’re allergic or prefer no nuts just request it!)
(4) You can’t go wrong with Blue Bell Mardi Gras King Cake Ice Cream from Publix! While it’s not a traditional King Cake, it’s SO good and definitely hits the spot! We get this every year and it is a limited edition so scoop it up!
